Monastery of Arkadi, Rethymnon

4.6
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Rethymnon
Resembling a fortress, the Eastern Orthodox Monastery of Arkadi served as an important site of Cretan resistance against the Ottoman rule. During the Cretan revolt of 1866, women, the elderly, and children sought refuge from battle in the monastery's powder room. When the Ottomans reached the powder room, the hidden Cretans lit the gunpowder, killing themselves, as well as many Turkish soldiers. Explore this important national site and admire the varied architecture of the complex. Make sure to spend time in the 16th century church. The striking construction was heavily influenced by Renaissance art. Take care to be respectful of the many pilgrims who come here for spiritual reasons. • We visited the monastery and found it very worth seeing. The entrance fee is reasonable. Beautiful location in the mountains, there were many corners to discover.

  • To the monastery we drove from Heraklion through the mountains-after a fairly decent road through the village of Anogia (rather disappointed), Margarites (on the contrary pleasant surprise), Eletherna (excavations we missed)-the monastery of Moni Arkadi was an amazing ending of wandering the mountains. This place has an atmosphere, is well maintained, does not suffer from the pressure of tourists crowds. I consider it a visit to be one of the most beautiful experiences in Crete.

  • Beautiful ruins with a sad but interesting story. Great view around the monastery. Also there is a cafe next to it with kids playground and some animals. Here you can sit and relax a bit. Better come in the morning before it gets crowded.
  • Really interesting place, beautiful with a dark history, odd feeling. Were the monks warriors? They looked fearsome with all there guns and knifes (old pics as you walk through) Pity human beings always have to fight one another?
