Monastery of the Great Meteoron, Kalambaka

4.8
#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Kalambaka
The largest and oldest of the monasteries in Meteora, Monastery of the Great Meteoron gives insight into the former monastic way of life. The original, much smaller monastery was established about 1340 by monk St. Athanasios and was added on to St. Iosaph later. Visit the kitchen, which contains the original bread oven and soup hearth, both hundreds of years old. Look around the carpenter's workshop and cellar to get an idea of daily life for the monks who once lived here. Outside, you'll find the sacristy, where the skulls and bones of former inhabitants are gathered. • It's a bit of a hike, and the heights are daunting, but it's well worth it. I have acrophobia and am pushing 80, and was able to do it. Be sure to take water with your camera, of course!  more »
  • Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, there is no shortage of superlatives to describe the Meteores, a site born of transformation during the tertiary era and the will of men. The description is not enough, going to the site takes another dimension, the visit of one of the monasteries (with guide) is essential to understand this page of history.

  • Was a great place to visit. Loads of history and things to learn and find out about if you are into that kind of stuff. View was brilliant. Enjoyed my visit here.
  • Breathtaking views at the biggest monastery of Meteora! About 300 stairs to climb up but the view is amazing! Visit the church and pay attention on the iconography. Walk down the stairs to the museum of Old holy books and relics.
