National Garden, Athens

#2 of 10 in Parks in Athens
Take a break from the heat and the crowds of the city at National Garden. Created by Queen Amalia in 1839, these gardens once belonged to the royal palace. Now, the 15.4 hectare (38 acre) property is open to the public throughout the day. Walk among the multitude of trees, flowers, and other greenery, or sit on one of the many benches to picnic and watch the ducks in the pond. Stop into the on-site mini zoo to view turtles, birds, goats, and some other animals. • I really like this garden in the heart of the city. You can spend half of Your day there, having picnic, walking around, seeing the animals, the trees and the flowers.  more »

  • In the center of Athens, the national garden is one of the magical places of the city. From alleys of orange trees having a wonderful smell to a small turtle lake and kids attractions, this place has a lot to make you spend a great time! Minus point, a lot of homeless people are leaving on the sides (they do not seem to be dangerous, but I would therefore not recommend kids to go there alone)... All in all a must see.
  • What was once the royal garden for a queen is now the best city park in Athens. Its winding paths are a place for quiet walks, or talks with friends. In spring, the scent of orange blossoms fills the air. In the summer, the shade it provides makes it one of the few places in the city center to escape the heat of the sun.
