National Archaeological Museum, Athens

#2 of 623 in Museums in Greece
The largest of Athens' many museums, National Archaeological Museum houses a vast collection of ancient artifacts unearthed from a variety of excavation sites around Greece. The museum's world-famous Mycenaean collection includes the 19th century finds by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, featuring golden funerary masks, relief stelae, alabaster tools, ivory carvings, and jewelry. The museum also displays a staggering array of ancient figurines, frescoes from the volcanic island of Santorini, and the oldest known mechanical computer, designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. There's so much to see here, it may take you several visits to absorb it all. Make your trip through ancient history a bit more comprehensible by arranging for a guided tour of the museum's most representative exhibits. National Archaeological Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Athens Edition.

  • I confirm the richness and importance of the exhibits. A must see. The negative aspects that I hope in the future are overcome are the lack of a map that signals the most important exhibits to see and also the lack of an audioguide. If you do not want to miss famous finds you must, before the visit, check on the Internet the most important things to see. At least I did that.

  • Lots of ancient sculptures and pottery, etc. Busy but not crowded. Big line-up to get in. Must put knapsacks into coat check area before being allowed inside.  more »

  • Beautiful place full of culture and great vibe. Beware that there are frequent school trips so it might be busier during term time. The place closes for around 4.30pm so get in there quick and enjoy the vibe. Also don't forget to go to the lower ground floor there is a beautiful garden area where u can have a drink and all but give yourself enough time to do that as when we got there it was all closed but we got to roam around and take some lovely pictures
  • Probably the best museum in Greece and one of the most important in the whole world. Although a bit underrated, it has invaluable collections of ancient Greek art. Unfortunately, due to the lack of space, there are some really exciting and rare "treasures" stacked in the warehouses and put on display only temporarily. Access is easy but can be crowded at times both during the weekend, but also during weekdays due to many schools visits. Highly recommend!
