Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), Schwerin

Set on an island in the lake Schweriner See, Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss)has undergone many renovations over the centuries and is now the seat of the local government. It also hosts an art museum that features seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings. The castle's roots date back to 1160, when Henry the Lion (Henry III) built a castle at this site. Later the dukes of Mecklenburgonce lived in the castle, which fell into disrepair when they moved out in 1765. A round of vast renovations kicked off in 1843. The German state took over the site in 1918. Later, fire damage set off another round of renovations. If you visit, keep an eye out for the Ghost of Petermännchen, said to be a very short man in 17th-century clothes. • A few years ago we visited the castle. And now we repeated the experience. And we did not regret it. Even though we were thrilled at the time, we were even more this time. A guided tour that gave us even more information about the God beautiful castle. We can only recommend it once again.

  • Beautiful castle very impressive, built flush with water, it is worth visiting the interior, ideal for fans of Meissen ceramics. You can only visit part of the castle but it is beautiful and very well preserved. The throne room is beautiful. The gardens are also very beautiful. Today part of the castle houses the parliament building of this region. You can get from Hamburg by regional train. Even the country merit a walk is very nice and quaint.

  • I run out of words to describe how beautiful this place really is. The castle itself from the outside is an absolute Marvel and the surrounding Gardens I was such a pleasure to walk through no matter the weather. You can see the castle from a great distance away and it is a fantastic backdrop.
  • A fairy tale palace... Pretty sure Rapunzel lived in one of the towers... Must visit... You can visit a small part of the old duke's living quarters. ... The boat ride in the surrounding lake is also a must do.
