Miniatur Wunderland, Hamburg
The world's largest model railway layout, Miniatur Wunderland consists of 12,000 m (39,000 ft) of tracks built in HO scale (1:87). This awe-inspiring exhibit is divided into seven sections with over nearly 900 trains, 11,000 carriages, 300,000 lights, 215,000 trees, and 200,000 human figurines. The layout includes huge panoramas of the Alps, the American West, Switzerland, Hamburg, and the fictitious city of Knuffingen. The latter features its own airport, with planes capable of taxiing and even flying. Originally started in 2000 by brothers Gerrit and Frederik Braun, this project is continuously expanding. It's expected to reach its final construction phase in 2020. Save time by booking your tickets online. Call the site in advance to arrange a behind-the-scenes tour. Miniatur Wunderland Reviews
If you and your children like trains, it is the place to be in Hamburg. We did enjoy the airport and the orther scenes. Our son( 4 years) was very impressed and we all enjoyed the visit. more »

Highly recommended this visit, both for children and adults.
This is definitely a must do in Hamburg. The amount of details is incredible! I loved my time there and I would go there a second time for sure. I recommend buying the tickets online, so you can avoid long queues and potentially have some discount (some arrival times are cheaper buying online). Also recommend arriving early or going late in the afternoon, so the place is not crowded and you can enjoy the miniatures easily. You can easily stay 3 to 5 hours there.
I spent nearly 6 hours in the Wunderland, and I still feel like I haven't seen all that much. There are so many secrets and surprises everywhere, as well as a really beautiful day/night cycle. So many things are blinking, moving, driving, it's really wonderful. The attention to detail is staggering, and it's obvious that a lot of work went into each area. Some places (Switzerland!) span multiple floors, and every mini-country is connected by rail. The. Wunderland always seems full of life and movement, with special events happening once in a while. If you're into photography, then it's a great place to practice and take good pictures. You may benefit from a macro lens/adapter, though it's not required. Since everything is so small-scale, it allows you to take beautiful depth-of-field and bokeh pictures. Just note that lighting can be dim (especially during Wunderland night!) so a good night lens might come in useful (as well as a good zoom lens). One of the best museums I've been to :)
