Gropius Bau, Berlin

4.2
#35 of 193 in Museums in Berlin
Standing in the center of Berlin, Gropius Bau was designed by Heino Schmeiden and Martin Gropius, the great uncle of Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus movement. Built between 1877 and 1881 in a classically inspired neo-Renaissance style, the building stands alongside a piece of the Berlin Wall. It now houses contemporary art collections and serves as a major international exhibition and event venue. More than 20 large-scale art, photography, and anthropological exhibits stop here every year--past exhibits have focused on Native American tribes, Frida Kahlo, and Anish Kapoor. The high-ceilinged cafe is a good place to stop for refreshments. In warm weather, you can eat outside in the garden. Planning Berlin trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • The Martin Gropius is a beautiful brick building that is located next to the area of the topography of terror. The building that presents interesting decorations and reliefs, bears the name of the architect who designed it and was born to be a museum, currently houses only non-permanent art exhibitions. Particularly beautiful are the mosaics interspersed with the windows of the top floor.

  • Because of the many bombings in this zone (the Hitler bunker and all kinds of government buildings from Nazi times were not far away), the building is lost. It is a beautiful building, which has nothing to do with Bauhaus (which you would think of the name Gropius-Martin was Walter's family), where changing exhibitions are organized. Next to Topographie des Terrors.

  • interesting exhibitions and all, rooms can be a bit too small and crowded at times but otherwise a super nice museum, definitely go visit if you are in Berlin! you can even buy your tickets in advance on their website to avoid waiting in a long queue :)
  • I have been here a couple of times over the years and have been impressed by their large and well laid out exhibitions spaces. My only reservation is that the tickets don't allow you to go to all of the exhibitions -- just the one you purchased. I saw the fascinating Gurlitt show.
