Aachen Cathedral (Dom), Aachen

4.7
Admire the impressive architectural mix of Gothic and Carolingian-Romanesque styles at Aachen Cathedral (Dom). Often referred to as the Imperial Cathedral, the church is the oldest of its kind in northern Europe. It served as the coronation site for German monarchs. You can tour the imperial throne and high altar of the mosaic-filled Palatine chapel. Then, head outside to see the dramatic Westwork, the building's western facade of staircases, niches, and bronze sculptures. Take a guided tour to see the throne and final resting place of Charlemagne. • Inside this church is one of the most beautiful I have seen. A must is to visit with a guide because this will lead you to places where not everyone can come. This you should definitely have done if you are in Aachen.

  • The Cathedral is very nice and attractive with a lot of things to see inside. Moreover, it is also important from the historical point of view because of the coronation of Charlemagne.  more »

  • This is one of my favorite cathedrals in Germany. It’s beautifully restored and dripping in centuries of history. The mosaic ceiling is completely captivating with details that will have you looking up for hours. Do yourself and book a cathedral tour so that you can view the relics up close and almost touch Charlemagne’s throne. This tour can be booked at the Cathedral Centre behind the cathedral and is not available winter months.
  • The place is gorgeous. It is so well conserved. It is one of my favourite places in Aachen. And It also has Charlemagne's throne. The main area (where the Altar is) is free of charge, but if you wanna go upstairs you will have to pay. You also have to pay €1 if you wanna take pictures.
