Georgian National Museum perpetuates an enduring museum tradition in Georgia. Established in 2004, it represents the biggest cultural complex in the country consisting of museums, National Gallery, museum-reserves, famous Georgian artists' house-museums, scientific and research institutions and libraries.

  • This is a good place for the first time tourist to visit to get to know Georgian culture and how the area has evolved over the ages. Tickets are very reasonably priced and the museum has been very well curated. At the ground level you'll encounter the evolution section relating to the geographical region. On the upper floor are the main archeological and historical sections which exhibit numerous artifacts from the B.C. period onwards that provide a glimpse into life of local populace at the time. There is also a numismatic section which has an array of ancient coins also in chronological sequence that provides a view into the various dynasties of the past and their rulers. Then there is the section that has numerous icons linking Georgian history to its religious faith and how the two are intertwined. A most interesting section. Finally there's the section covering the years of Soviet Occupation. This has been laid out in a stark and sombre manner depicting the atrocities of the time. I would strongly recommend not missing this important exhibit. There is also a souvenir shop opposite the lockers area. All in all an illuminating visit on Georgian culture and evolution of the area. Do keep at least 2 hours or more for visiting this museum.
  • I personally am not a great lover of museums but this one is worth a visit. Nice lockers to put your jackets, backpacks or shopping in so you can wander around unhindered and enjoy the displays or have some cake and tea at the restaurant. We were not allowed to take photos though.
