Stalin Museum, Gori

#2 of 7 in Things to do in Gori
Dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, Stalin Museum charts his life and history, from his birth in a small mud-brick house until his death in 1953. The museum sits on the site of his childhood home--in fact, it contains the small house where he was born under a specially built awning. Presenting a balanced account of his rise to power, the museum has a small room dedicated to political repression during Stalin's regime. Enter the first hall upstairs to learn about Stalin's childhood and to read some of his poetry. Learn about the ruler's relationship with Lenin, which ran from friendship and loyalty to Lenin's public criticism of Stalin's tactics. View a copy of Stalin's death mask, a reconstruction of his office in the Kremlin, and his bulletproof, personal train carriage. The museum offers guided tours in English, German, and French. A visit to Stalin Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Gori travel route planning app to plot your vacation.

  • We drove past Gori, decided to come and see Stalin's house. It is very similar to many houses in Tbilisi on Avlobar. It seems that today many people live in such poor houses. The museum did not go-there are crowds of foreign tourists.

  • If in the area it is worth visiting. Monothematic and celebratory, of course, but it helps to better understand Russian history and this controversial character than learned in school books. Useful to visit it accompanied by a guide. I do not describe the museum complex since it has already been described well in previous reviews.

  • Very interesting museum. Definitely worth visiting. When I went, they told me to wait for an English tour. Do not be afraid to ask about the tour. I had to ask a few times before they finally called the tour guide to come give the tour.
  • No English explanations, in a "museum" where 80% of material is black&white photos with a tag like "J Stalin in 1912" or so. It feels more like a memorial than a place to learn anything. A night in a guesthouse in Gori is cheaper than the entrance ticket of 15GEL. The parks outside are free to visit and very beautiful, the "museum" was bad. Avoid it
