Gauguin Museum, Hiva Oa

#4 of 12 in Museums in French Polynesia
Head to Gauguin Museum for an introduction to one of French Polynesia's most famous adopted sons. The French Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin adored the islands from the time he first visited in 1891, taking up full-time residence here in the years proceeding his death in 1903. The museum collects memorabilia, photographs, and documents related to the artist--including some sketches attributed to the artist himself--and displays them in an imaginative and informative way. Be inspired by the artist's relationship with the islands, and pick up a souvenir print or postcard to take away with you. • The part on the history of the Marquesas is very well documented, with original pieces. On the other hand on Gauguin it is not interesting. The part about Jacques BREL is super well arranged, I advise you

  • Of course they're just reproductions, but you'd think so. You learn a little more about your life. Next to this museum there is also his house, not much to see but the location and the garden is interesting.
