Trip Planner: Europe / France / Grand Est / Bas-Rhin / Strasbourg / Musée historique de la ville de Strasbourg
Located in the Grande Boucherie, the city's old slaughterhouse from 1587, Musée historique de la ville de Strasbourg is dedicated to displaying artifacts that tell the tumultuous tale of Strasbourg. One of these artifacts is the "Grüselhorn," a horn that was blown every evening at 10:00 p.m. during medieval times to order Jewish people out of the city. Examine the 1/600 scale models depicting the city in 1727. The recently renovated collections span the Middle Ages to the French Revolution, including paintings, graphic arts, costumes, furniture, military weapons, uniforms, and objects from daily life. What I admired is that they associated the name of the streets with that of the profession of craftsmen: tanners, tailors etc... And especially in the 14th century the Strasbourgers were asking questions that were always topical: the marriage of priests, the representation of the church, denouncing that it is the richest and always the same who decide on the life of the city. Then there is the terrible period of the Second World War. We still come out upset.
An excellent and well put together museum. Headphones automatically prompt you to the display in front of you. Very English friendly. Paints an amazing picture about the history of Strasbourg. From oil paintings of monarchies to videos of World War II...with interactivity everywhere. Our only regret is we did plan our day well and didn't have enough time. But do not miss this if you have any interest in European history. Need at least three hours to visit this properly.
Great layout and automatic guided recordings depending where you stand. Fantastic detail of the city and its long, dual history as an intersection of cultures and languages. Will return with our next visitors to absorb more content. Friendly staff too.
