Trip Planner: Europe / France / Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone / Marseille / Chateau d'If
An impressive castle, Chateau d'If was the setting for Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." This three-story building is 28 m (91 ft) high, situated on an island, and bordered by three towers with large gun embrasures. The castle never weathered an actual attack, though, and was eventually transformed into a prison. French Protestants were sent there in the early 19th century. The castle was converted into a public museum in 1890. It can now be reached by boat from Marseille's old port. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Marseille holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Chateau d'If and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Chateau d'If Reviews
Na ostrov Edmonta Dantése,neboli "hraběte Monte Christa" se dostanete snadno lodí, ze starého přístavu.Dávejte pozor, protože lodí zde jezdí více a mají různé trasy.Některé jezdí i na ostrovy v okolí a... more »The island of edmondantése, or "Count of Monte Cristo", is easily reached by boat, from the old port. Pay attention, as there are more boats and different routes. Some also go to the islands nearby and some even to distant destinations. If you choose, just a cruise to the island of D ́If, so the return ticket will cost you 11 euros and the entrance itself to the fortress, another 6 euros. Children pay full admission. The price includes a guide in the Czech language. It is in pink color and request it, free of charge when entering the fortress. It is noteworthy that this place, globally, is famous for the personality, which is a literary fiction. And that is Edmond Dantes, or "Count Monte Christo". However, this historical monument is appreciated and frequented. The last prisoners, in this fortress, were German prisoners at the time of the 1st World War. There is an interactive museum of Alexander Dumas, as well as a museum, its world-famous novel, "The Count of Monte Christo". Just, there's a lot to view and a visit is definitely worth it.
Un castello arroccato sull'isola di If nel golfo davanti al porto di Marsiglia. Il luogo è reso famoso dai racconti di Dumas e del Conte di Montecristo che qui vede l'inizio della sua storia. The place is made famous by the tales of Dumas and the Earl of Monte Cristo who sees here the beginning of its history. It is an old prison now used as a museum; to get there you have to take a boat from the port of Marseille (a/r 10.50 euros but you can also continue to the island of Frioul) while the entrance to the castle costs 6 euros apiece Some tips: if you do not plan to visit the castle do not go to the island of IF because in fact you can't do anything interesting or even turn it around because all the roads start from the castle. You won't be able to swim on the island of If, there are no beaches it's all overhanging rock. Beware the seagulls are definitely aggressive because they are used to people and do not want them around especially in the period of hatching eggs Bring water and live if you wish there is a bar but it has prices as if you were in the center of Paris Check the ferry schedules and nn dedicated more than two hours to visit. My advice is to go with the first boat (9.30am from Marseille) and you'll return with the one of 11.30 which however passes by Friuol. The castle itself has nothing, there is not much to see if you are not passionate about the history of the castle (reading it written) and the events of Dumas and his novels.
Amazingly picturesque and legendary fortress sitting on the white rock in the middle of the Marseilles' bay. Beautiful construction, visit at your own pace, stroll in the small park, rest with a coffee. Only accessible when weather allows.
Cool for the first 30-45 min. But don't think it was worth the ferry ride and having to wait for the ferry to pick us up (comes roughly every hour and half). Not everything is translated to English. A lot of the rooms/cells look the same and while the view is nice, there's limited seating to enjoy it without standing on or sitting on bird poop. The bathrooms are modern and clean on the island.
