Chateau de Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau
Trip Planner: Europe / France / Ile-de-France / Seine-et-Marne / Fontainebleau / Chateau de Fontainebleau
Unlike at busy Château de Versailles, the lack of crowds at Chateau de Fontainebleau means you're free to enjoy this palace almost as its inhabitants did in centuries past. This was the preferred residence of French kings and emperors for seven centuries. François I made the palace his permanent residence in 1527--breathing new life into the ruins with origins dating back to 1137. A succession of kings worked to further rehabilitate the castle, which is where Marie de Medici delivered her baby, who later became King Louis XIII. See where Napoléon I addressed his subjects after the French Revolution as you step into the Emperor's Throne Room. Italian artists Rosso and Primatice decorated the interior with frescoes, which you can still view today. It is further away in the homonymous town ~ 55 km from Paris (we went by train from Paris-Gare de Lyon) and is open every day except Tuesday. An Impressive palace, house of Kings of France (for some time and Napoleon), was the first building of Renaissance style in France and in its glamorous halls you will see many works of art. It has very nice gardens too!

It opens at 9:30, not too crowded except Asian tourists who speak loudly despite that we were equipped with audio guides, indispensable to understand everything well. Very interesting museum dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and his family, splendid apparat apartment and throne room. Then the huge apartment called the Pope and finally the great apartments including the sumptuous ones of Marie Antoinette. Gold crockery, furniture signed by the greatest cabinetmakers, tapestries or carpets adoring the circuit of discovery or rediscovery of the lifestyle of our Kings of Louis VII to Napoleon III
Very cool chateau !it's a really cool place to walk around in imagine all of the history that has taken place here at this location throughout the centuries. I would love to be able to go back in time and watch events that have taking place here. When I was here it was very cold and rainy but still very beautiful. There was actually snow on the ground as well.
Beautiful place, with beautiful grounds... you could walk around here for half a day if you wanted.. its peaceful and beautiful with an amazing chateau. Well worth a trip
