Set on a limestone promontory, the massive fortified Citadelle de Calvi offers panoramic views of the bay. Built by Genoese governors in 1450, the citadel has fended off quite a few major assaults throughout the centuries, including Franco-Turkish invaders and Anglo-Corsican soldiers. Engraved in marble on the porch, "Civitas Calvi Semper Fidelis" means that Calvi inhabitants are loyal to Genoa, an ironic statement because the French controlled the island--in alignment with the Turkish people. Go inside the battlements to see the governor's residence and the 13th-century Cathédrale St-Jean Baptiste that contains the celebrated "Christ des Miracles" relic made from ebony. Stroll the citadel's five bastions, each offering seascape views of Corsica's legendary calm waves. If the Citadel is also appreciated, it is also for its privileged geographical location. Perched on its rocky promontory, it offers a 360 degree panorama of the city, the marina, and the mountains that flow into the sea. Its cobbled streets and typically "genovese" houses tell you in their own way the history of the city.
La citadelle de Calvi est très belle, ce cadre magnifique, ces petites ruelles, ses vues sur mer et sur Calvi, très très beau more »The citadel of Calvi is very beautiful, this beautiful setting, these little alleys, its views of the sea and Calvi, very very beautiful
The old citadel with many small tourist shops and restaurants. Nice view to the city and Porto. The most interesting places are marked with a sequence numbers. The entrance with car only with a special permit. There is a huge parking in the city near the entrance. The price in shops is definitely higher as usual.
Fantastic place. Very nice view over all of Calvi. Did you know that Marco Polo was born in Calvi? He was not from Genoa as many stories goes and are told. He was born here.. Most parts of the Castle (Citadelle) is being renovated so some parts might be difficult to approach. Nice afternoon outing.
