Admire the architectural landmark of Vesturkirkjan Church, whose stark, angular design stands out as a singularity on the Faroe Islands. A large glass-panel facade lets in light to the interior, where you can climb to the upstairs gallery and take in the whole of the structure. Note the unusual organ and modern lighting fixtures, which complement the overall spare yet elegant aesthetic. Do check the opening hours before you go, as the church has limited visiting times. Vesturkirkjan Church Reviews
Although not a tourist attraction per se, the pointed roof of the church dominates the Torshavn skyline. It's just a short walk from the centre of town, up a slight incline. Entry is free (although do... more »
Ville besøge Vesturkirkjan og beslutte at gå der til, der var ca 1 km fra havnen og den så jo ud til at ligge lige der oppe! Det var tørvejr men storm og den så ikke ud til at komme nærmere. It was dry weather but storm and it didn't seem to get closer. We came forward and it was a great church, white painted and copper roof, it should be seen from both sides, very monumental. Here was a small lake with drains under a bridge and a statue of Hans Pauli Olsen in front of the church. We thought to have read that it was open Tuesdays from 1600, but it was the church office. A nice gentleman blinded and we were locked in. This church is simply a cathedral value. Very high for the ceiling and the most beautiful black tiled floor, which down the hallway had carpet on. Good last place. Nice glass ball lamps. The altar of a chapter for itself it protrudes High. The baptismal fund is black and simple. Inside it was clear that the stones were big and coarse and with strong joints and everything so whitewashed or painted white. A great experience. The church is inaugurated in 1975 and, with its 42 metre tall tower, is a landmark for the city.
A nice getaway out of town.
Interesting architecture. Nice water feature out front (compete with a little ramp for ducks)
