Volunteer Point, East Falkland

An important bird conservation area, Volunteer Point also supports southern elephant seals and the largest colony of king penguins--once nearly extinct in the Falklands. Along the beach's 2 km (3.6 mi) of white sand, you can see many of the penguins going in and out of the ocean. (Watch your step to evade the penguins' nesting burrows.) Go hiking or join guided 4x4 tours to explore the area's rich wildlife, including gentoo and Magellanic penguins, steamer ducks, white-bridled and black-throated finches, and ruddy-headed geese. Amenities include a camping site with outdoor restrooms and a tiny house with a gas heater.
