Menkaure Pyramid, Cairo

4.5
Dating back to the 26th century BCE, Menkaure Pyramid ranks as the smallest of the pyramids in Giza. This structure most likely served as the burial place of the fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure. The limestone and granite structure stands 61 m (204 ft) tall. Unfortunately, the sarcophagus discovered here was lost in a shipwreck, while the coffin found inside is on display at the British Museum. • Worth a visit, morning opening hours is the best to avoid groups and crowds. The only drawback is the uncontrollable crooks circulating and the police are doing nothing. The ticket is not left anywhere, and the only one who will ask you is the security at the entrance to the pyramid.

  • The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three main Pyramids of Giza, located on the Giza Plateau in the southwestern outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. It is thought to have been built to serve as the tomb of the fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure. Menkaure's pyramid had an original height of 65.5 meters (215 feet) and was the smallest of the three major pyramids at the Giza Necropolis. It now stands at 61 m (204 ft) tall with a base of 108.5 m. Its angle of incline is approximately 51°20′25″. It was constructed of limestone and granite. The first sixteen courses of the exterior were made of red granite[citation needed]. The upper portion was cased in the normal manner with Tura limestone. Part of the granite was left in the rough. Incomplete projects such as this pyramid help archaeologists understand the methods used to build pyramids and temples. South of the pyramid of Menkaure is three satellite pyramids that are each accompanied by a temple and have a substructure. The southernmost is the largest and a true pyramid. Its casing is partly of granite, like the main pyramid, and is believed to have been completed due to the limestone pyramidion found close by.[1] Neither of the other two progressed beyond the construction of the inner core.[2] wikipedia
  • Absolutely staggering monument. The effect this place had on me when I looked up at these ancient colossal constructions was immense to say the least. I was lucky enough to enter one of them and view the internal structure. It was paradigm shifting. I was massively surprised that the proximity of the Pyramid site was so close to the City of Cairo but there we go, it makes sense when you are there in the flesh and not watching an Indiana Jones flick. Be careful when around the Pyramids as locals can harass you for money and place a serious rick on any valuables or children you may have with you.
