Egyptian Antiquities Museum, Cairo

4.4
#1 of 203 in Museums in Egypt
Ancient history at its best, Egyptian Antiquities Museum boasts a collection notable for its standout pieces and, with a total of around 120,000 pieces, for its depth. First timers will want to see the Gold Mask of Tutankhamen, the young ruler's funerary mask, discovered in 1925 and perhaps the most iconic of the museum's artifacts. The ground floor displays a wealth of coins and papyrus fragments, while up on the first floor you'll find most of the findings from the Valley of the Kings. • To say that I love it is nichegone say! The Cairo museum is a great heritage of Egypt and the place where I am ready to come back every year! in the year 2017 allowed photo and video shooting! (surcharge). It's fine to have your photos and videos! Because not everything is in the catalog!

  • The museum is very poorly organized and signage is lacking, which is a shame because it houses some real treasures. Admission is currently 160LE, 80 for students (Jan 2019). As usual, Arabs pay 7 times less than foreigners. Men in the courtyard are currently asking 300LE per hour and will show a fake ID to prove they are official. It is best to arrange an official guide ahead of time who will have better pricing, better English (or French or Spanish), and a degree in Egyptology. Do NOT pay extra to see the mummies, unless you enjoy seeing 2 dozen dead people in bandages and various states of decomposition. There is no extra fee for the Tutankhamen exhibit. At the very least, bring a guide book so you can see the important things here. The restaurant by the exit is very overpriced. Walk a couple of blocks to Tahrir Square to find better food at decent prices. Your ticket is valid all day, so you can leave and come back with the same ticket. • If you loved history or otherwise also you will love this place. But without a guide you will be confused unless you ready about the museum. You can spend good 3 hours in the museum. The mummy room is mind blowing. The jewelry and the canopies jars the coffins are just amazing. There is no proper direction mentioned inside the museum. They need to improve since the world visits your museum
