The Wall of Tears, Puerto Villamil

On a tour of Isabella Island, visit The Wall of Tears, a grim historical site that local legend says still emanates cries. Built by the island's penal colony from 1945 to 1959, the wall reportedly caused thousands of deaths of prisoners, who were forced to carry stones in the sweltering heat and isolation for days on end. Trek the scenic 7 km (4.3 mi) path, lined with mangroves, and you might spot some giant tortoises or other interesting Galapagos species along the way. • The wall itself is no of that. It was an unnecessary construction by the inmates when the Galapagos, between 1946 and 1959, was a penal colony. But to get there you take a walk, long (about 12 km between round trip) but not difficult, where you see everything. Turtles crossing the trail, iguanas, pelicans fishing in the sea, various birds, lagoons, beaches and terrestrial and marine panoramas. I recommend stopping at the various view points and "pozas" during the journey. On the way back I stopped at Playa del Estero and playa de l'Amor. Once you get to the miro you can continue on a fairly steep path to reach El Radar from which you can enjoy a fantastic view. You can also rent a Mountain bike type.

  • Quite a hot hike / ride until the end of the path where the wall is located. The wall has its story but don't expect anything extraordinary. In any case, there are many other sites to visit along the way that are worth it. The easiest and quickest way to get to the wall is by renting a bike, which you can do for 5$ an hour and will take you around 3 hours return.
  • Shed a few tears myself getting there but the track once you get off the sand is well done. Be prepared for steps and more steps after viewing the wall if you are going up to the look out. I'm not a cyclist and I still managed to do it.
