Trip Planner: South America / Ecuador / Galapagos Islands / Santa Cruz / Puerto Ayora / Charles Darwin Research Station
Charles Darwin Research Station allows visitors to learn about natural history and wildlife conservation in the Galapagos. Conducting scientific research and providing environmental education since 1959, the center remains best known for its breeding program for giant tortoises. Visitors can view baby tortoises in incubators, which are raised here until age four and then released into the wild. Explanations in both English and Spanish shed a light on the center's projects and the global goals of conservation efforts. A ten minute walk along a nice path will get you to the visitor center, which describes the activities at the center and has a beautiful picture of Charles Darwin put together as a mosaic of different pictures of the Galapagos islands. The center also has a gift shop, restrooms, a mini collection of specimens, and a snack bar. There is also a small area for toddlers to play. If you have your passport, don't forget to get a stamp! You can also send a postcard via email. The rest of the station is like a mini zoo with some tortoises and iguanas, but if you're in the Galapagos anyway, it's better to see these in the wild.
Nice walking trail with informational stands, research buildings, station beach, and tortoise center access. Great for a free morning activity.
