Strahov Monastery, Prague

3.7
Although its eye-catching spires rise imposingly over the city's skyline, the main attraction of Strahov Monastery remains its library, containing thousands of editions of the Bible. Established in the 1140s for the Premonstratensian religious order, the monastery functioned until 1950, when the Communist regime closed it down and imprisoned most of its monks. Returned to the order in 1989, the monastery underwent massive architectural restorations to repair damage caused by years of neglect. Inside the monastery's main gate, you can visit a 17th-century church, housing a valuable collection of artworks from the Gothic era, and the famed library's two halls. Linked by an elaborately decorated passage, the two halls contain a collection of nearly 3,000 original manuscripts. • A lovely place! One of the best views of Prague from the terrace under the monastery (free of charge). The library inside with the beautiful paintings and thousands of ancient books is absolutely stunning. It is often labeled as the most beautiful library in the world. Pro tip: The regular tickets include just a quick peek to the library from the corridor. If you want to go inside and see both library halls in detail you need a prior reservation of a private tour.
  • Picture gallery was great. Library - little lame - you can only look through door opening with the rope stopping you from entry. Taking picture 80 Kc per person + admission. Will I do it again - I don't think so. But bathrooms inside were super clean and free of charge!
