Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, Willemstad

4.6
A clever solution for spanning a large body of water, Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge features two diesel engines that allow it to swing open and let through oceangoing ships. Probably the world's only permanent pontoon bridge, this structure originally opened in 1888 and went through a complete reconstruction in the 1930s. Today, the "Swinging Old Lady" allows you to cross the St. Anna Bay on foot, or watch huge vessels entering and leaving the harbor. When the bridge swings open, two free-of-charge ferries bring pedestrians from one side of the bay to the other. • I fell in love with this place. The colors, peace and beauty envelop your senses when you are there. It is beautiful the color of the sea, of the houses, and to see how the floating bridge works is an unforgettable experience. You can enjoy eating local food and shopping in the surroundings. An advice: ask for some help to take picture of yourself.
  • Pride of the island! Our old swinging lady is one of the many attractions of Curacao. Nice to have a walk on it during day and night time.
