Hato Caves, Willemstad

#3 of 16 in Parks in Willemstad
Once home to the Amerindian Arawaks 1500 years ago, Hato Caves still contain many of the petroglyphs left behind by their original inhabitants. A comfortable, paved trail leads you deep into the Earth, winding through stalagmites, stalactites, and other bizarre rock formations. You’ll have a guide on hand to relay stories of how man's relationship with the caves has evolved over time, while also explaining the geology behind the caves' formation. With steep paths and steps, entering the caves can present difficulties for people with mobility issues. Quickly create a custom-made itinerary for Willemstad using our trip planner.

  • We took a nice narrated bus ride through the city to the caves, caves were great to walk in and guide was knowledgeable. Was a great tour but if you have mobility issues it's not for you.  more »
  • CURACAO - Booked this tour through VIATOR.COM They failed to list in their ad that upon arrival there is a winding old stone 49 step staircase up a steep hill, and then those 49 steps back down again....  more »

  • Got a private tour as we were lucky enough to just miss two tour busses. The guide was great, but the caves were fairly small in scale compared to other cave systems I've explored in the US. Good to see if you've never seen caves before, though. Not handicap accessible. About 49 steps to get to the entrance of the caves. Smooth, paved path once inside, but there are steps.
  • Hato caves are not the largest caves but full of history. Slaves hid in the cave entrance. You can see the smoke stains from their fires. They allow pictures only in one area. It is warmer than most caves. You have to walk uphill to the entrance. The guide was easy to understand and did a great job.
