Iznaga Tower, Trinidad

4.3
Once Cuba's tallest building, Iznaga Tower was used to watch over slaves during the 19th century. The seven-story structure was built in 1816 and stands at 45 m (147 ft) tall. The bell that currently sits at the tower's base once hung at the top and was used to signify the workday's beginning and end, as well as prayer times. Visitors can climb to the top and take in views of nearby mountains and former sugar plantations below. • The tower itself is sweaty during the ascent, but compensates with great views over the entire valley. Price for the ascent 1 CUC. In the adjacent house of the sugar baron you can press sugar cane juice against a small obolus and drink with/without rum. Don't miss it, it's an experience. There is also a clean and good toilet as well as something to eat.

  • Interesting history lesson here. How slaves were miss-treated by the land owners who forced them to work and to live in captivity. The search tower is well worth the climb to the top too.
  • Nice, there are steps up for a view of the city
