Plaza de la Catedral, Havana

4.6
Cuban history comes alive at Plaza de la Catedral, home to one of Havana's oldest and most significant Catholic churches. Laid out on an erstwhile swamp, this epicenter of Havana's World Heritage-listed old town represents a kind of open-air museum of Caribbean Baroque architecture. Like the cathedral, the square dates back to the 1700s, when the area became a naval dockyard. Later, the neighborhood housed some of Havana's finest private mansions. Today, a number of popular restaurants and the city's museum of colonial art lie clustered around the plaza. • I went through it without even taking a picture. The cathedral is just beautiful, there are plenty of restaurants in the area of course. I'll think about it for my next trip to enter the cathedral

  • Instead of the old church that existed here, 18. Century, this cathedral was built. In terms of its exterior architecture, the ancient Greek-Grek-inspired lines and pillars and the interior of the spectacular cathedral are very lean and simple. After Pope Jean Paul visited Havana, a statue was placed inside the cathedral. It's surrounded by old buildings overlooking the small square in front. The statue of a flamenco singer leaning under one of them is a little surprise.

  • The last of the main squares to be created, this is one of Old Havana's most beautiful spots. The cathedral which gives the square its definitive appearance, the other three sides are taken up by the facades of 18th century aristocratic baroque mansions, all built within the 40 year period and showing a strong architectural harmony.
  • Beautiful cathedral. A great visit to the area. We loved all the old architecture. The locals we're great. Make sure you stop and eat in a real locals restaurant
