BIG GAME FISHING – „PROIZD“Use our Vela Luka travel planner to arrange your visit to Proizd Island and other attractions in Vela Luka.
Known from ancient times troughout the world as a jewel of the Adriatic Sea, Korčula or Corcyra Nigra, has rich mythological and colorful history of seafarers and explorers. But it is just as famous for providing some of the most exhilarating and challenging Big Game Fishing anywhere in the Europe.
With its rich marine fauna, well-indented coast which is faced with more than 1246 islands and islets, reefs, it is not surprising that Croatia is revered by Deep Sea Fishing enhusiasts worldwide.
This excursion provides a firsthand life experience for those who love fishing and love the sea. Our team organizes trips on all the coasts of the southern Dalmatian islands, but focuses particularly on the relatively unexploited West and South-West areas around Korčula archipelago (the western and parts of Korčula and Hvar and Šćedro, the islands of Svetac, Brusnik and Biševo with northwestern and southeastern parts of Vis, the southeastern part of Lastovo, with surrounding islands, including important fishing areas around Sušac, Jabuka pit and Palagruža archipelago) for an even greater rewarding fishing experience.
Fishing trip starts in early morning around 6.00 -7.00 h from Vela Luka on the Island of Korčula.
The traditional fishing village of Vela Luka, from where our boat depart is worth exploring as well. It is famous for the hospitality of its inhabitants and it is perfect place to be if you wish to explore typical dalmatian ways of life. The inhabitants of Vela Luka have traditionally made their livelihood from fishing, and more than half of the men who live here today are either sailors or fishermen.
Slowly we are sailing off the bay of Vela Luka and passing the Island of Proizd where we will make break for lunch around 13. 00/14. 00 in local restaurant and where anglers will have the opportunity to try the best fish specialties. We can also make arrangements with a restaurant and prepare the fish we caught so you can feast on the fruits of your labour and admire one of the most beautifull beaches in Croatia.
Little island of Proizd is well-known because it was chosen in 2007 as the Beach of the Year by the Croatian Tourist Board, whereas the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph placed it among the five most beautiful Adriatic beaches.
This area is not just rich because for its unspoild beauty, it is also rich of the big game fish species: little tunnies, Great amberjack, swordfish, and especially Bluefin tuna can be found in large amount. Thanks to suitable climate and favourable weather conditions, warm deep blue waters and rich marine fauna, manny sunny days and sea temperature are ideal for anglers and a pleasant stay on board.
Island of Korčula is perfect location for Big Game Fishing because it sits in the heart of fish-rich seas - we are surrounded by well-known fishing spots: Palagruža archipelago and Nature Park Lastovo.
There are the waters between Korčula and its smaller sibling island, Proizd, home to excellent and famous big game fishing grounds. Then, further South are the waters of Sušac and Palagruža Island, providing fishing grounds which are almost untouched as they are unhabitated. With large schools of Bluefin tuna, little tunnies, sharks, Greater amberjack, and swordfish in the area all year round, and seasonal visits from many other species, the fishing off Korčula is an experience you will never forget.
Palagruža is group of islets and rocks in the middle of the Adriatic, halfway between Croatian and Italian coast. It is the furthest and most southern point of Croatia. It consists of Vela and Mala Palagruža, Sjeverni and Južni Kamik, and slightly further away - Galijula. The sea around Palagruža is the richest fishing area in the Adriatic. The island itself is a nature reserve of endemic plant and animal species.
The Lastovo Islands with their 195.83 km2 covering archipelago is the jungest Croatian Nature park. Thanks to the great amount of zooplankton, the waters around the island of Lastovo are one of the richest fish areas of the Adriatic Sea. The area is famous for colonies of lobsters, crabs, groupers, abberjacks, golden brasses.
After the lunch break we are sailing south towards Sušac and Palagruža. After half an hour we are on the open sea and adventure can begin.
Depending on preferences we can arrange any other desired lacation (depending on weather/wind ) in advice with our captain. Return is scheduled in the afternoon, an active hunting lasts till 18.00 pm ( or by arrangement) there is a possibility of flexible terms.
We are sailing out to the open sea with captain Nikola Žuvela on his boat „Proizd“. The boat "Proizd" French brand Jeanneau Merry Fisher 750 overall lenghts 7.50 m (24'7") and 3.00 m width. The boat speed is more than 20 nautical miles. It has a spacious cockpit and is fully equipped for all fishing techniques (Jigging equipment, Shimano reels and Jigging master rods 5 complete fishing tackles – rods and reels – of 80 lbs and 30 lbs,.), and with excellent marine electronics: (radar, depth sounder, GPS device,). The "Proizd" offers comfort and the possibility for 4-5 fishermen and the crew to enjoy the fishing (represents the optimal number of members). Captain explains that choosing this kind of boat offers you a direct contact with the sea and fish, so that every team member can take part actively in the Big Game Fishing.
Our captain Nikola Žuvela, will discover the secrets of sea and best fishing spots. With more then 15 years of experience he is president of game fish club „Zubatac“ and holder of the highest individual fishing quota for this area. But above of his fishing knowledge more important is his deep love and respect for the sea. Whether you're just a beginner or an experienced fisherman, you'll thoroughly enjoy yourself on fishing expedition with the Proizd Fishing Team. You will also learn about fishing knots, hooks, lines, and nets, as well as how to use different fishing techiques.
In Big Game Fishing there are several different fishing techniques:
TROLLING (panula) is a line method of fishing. The fishing lines are baited with lures or live bait, then gently pulled to the surface, teasing and inviting predators to attack. Many types of fish will be happy to pull this jig because its shape and motion provoke them to strike. This kind of fishing technique can give you some of the most exciting moments in your fishing "career". The targeted fish for this type of activity is: Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, Tunnies, Bonitos and others.
DRIFTING is a more traditional and the most widespread Big Game fishing style used in the Adriatic. Because it's the most widespread, it is also the most successful. Giant Bluefin Tuna is a fierce fighter due to its weight, so this fishing technique is the best choice for catching some of the bigger species. Since our equipment is already in the sea, we are throwing baits from the floating boat inviting these large predators to come closer. When our echo-sounder recognizes the presence of an approaching fish, we are preparing for a real fight.
JIGGING is very popular fishing technique in recent years. A jig consists of a lead sinker coupled with a hook. Jigs are intended to create a jerky, vertical motion. For successful jigging, the jigger needs to use a rod which is good for feeling a bite. It needs to stay in contact with the jig and be able to deliver the system to exactly where the fish happen to be. We use this technique to catch Greater Amberjack ( Ricciola), Common dentex (Dentice), Dusky Grouper (Cernia bruna), Red porgy (Paga). It's actually a very demanding fishing technique and it requires great physical condition.
Nikola usualy combines several different techniques on fishing trip. He prefers traditional fishing techniques : parangal, kančenica and penula.Raised on island, from an early age he used to go with his grandfather who taught him fishing. Longline called “parangal” – consists of a base string on which a shorter strings with hooks are attached in regular intervals. The bait known as “ješka” is placed on the hooks; the longline is thrown in the sea and after some time is pulled in the boat with the catch.
„Parangal“ is not just fishing techniques, for Nikola means much more and represents a family tradition that he wants to preserve and nurture. On the islands, fishing is a trade as well as an art form which has been passed down, father to son, for countless generations.
Nikola explains that the culture of fishing is deeply rooted in the lives of the Dalmatian people. The sea provides a way of life that is evident even today in a coastal civilization. As in days of antiquity, life lived next to the sea is synonymous with the sea itself. For traditional fishermen, the sea drives their emotions, dictates their moods, and puts bread on the table.

You don't have to book and the cost of the hike is reasonable. If you are in a car try to get equipped with cash (half a pirate's chest should suffice) because the parking meter does not accept cards or banknotes. In less than an hour's drive you get to Proizd and the view is immediately noticeable. In fact, you'll find, it's all a great deception, and it is for two reasons. First, the restaurant, the only one on the islet, captures the sight and smell as soon as you descend from the boat. That is not really a feat, with those mega grids always lit so typically Croatian. The menu however is not anything and not worth what it costs. This is direct consequence of the monopoly that the owners hold on catering. We arrived unprepared and we had to fall, but I recommend to bring the packed lunch. The second great deception is the sea: what you see on the coast of the port is beautiful, yes, but it is nothing compared to the crystalline waters of the 3-4 beaches (one for nudists) scattered throughout the rest of the island. Take a look at the map and follow the signs along the pine forest trails: you won't regret it. With a sandwich, two bottles of water and lots of sunscreen, no one kills you anymore, guaranteed!
Once I red that on Proizd there is one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia... we found the bay but it was big disappointment. Nothing special.
Fantastic place to swe and spend a day. Beautiful beaches with almost no people.
