Sultan's Palace, Moutsamoudou

#7 of 17 in Things to do in Comoros
Discover one of the finest examples of Swahili architecture at Sultan's Palace, the home of several sultans’ dynasties, and a place where agreements that would change the course of history were reached. It was here where slavery in the country was abolished, and accords with the USA and France were signed. The once-grandiose mansion, built in 1786 for Sultan Abdullah using a combination of lava blocks and limestone, is now in ruins. However, you can still see Arabo-Islamic inscriptions on tall ceilings, as well as countless other interior decorations, which stand in contrast to the rather modest facade. Sultan's Palace is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Moutsamoudou Edition.
