Kowloon Walled City Park, Hong Kong

#13 of 144 in Parks in Hong Kong
Visit the garrison that became known for crime and debauchery at Kowloon Walled City Park. The attraction occupies the site of the former Kowloon Walled City, a unique peninsula garrison that remained under China's jurisdiction until Hong Kong was ceded to Britain. In 1899 Chinese troops were forced to vacate, leaving the garrison a lawless enclave that became a safe haven for criminals, prostitutes, gangs, and drugs lords hidden in a network of dark alleyways. Eventually, the 30,000 residents were relocated and the grounds reclaimed for a park. A model of the slum's illegally constructed network of buildings can be seen at the park today, surrounded by reclaimed natural beauty amid a peaceful atmosphere. Kowloon Walled City Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Hong Kong Edition.

  • The park is truly spectacular as it is located in the middle of Kowloon which is synonymous with towering skyscrapers. In addition, the park is free, so tourists do not have to spend the pocket to get here. In it there are many traditional Chinese architecture in the past and very rich in Chinese culture within the park.

  • After visiting the city of Kowloon, I decided to take a look at the park and see what it was. Obviously, it used to be a nine-city wall city-with about 5 residents. This place does not belong within the jurisdictional of British or Chinese control. But this place has a history of more than more than 1000 years (since the Song Dynasty). Now, seen in the park, there is a large Jiangnan style garden (really wasted money to build it, because Hong Kong has been a British colony). And see the legacy of the old city walls and the nga doors. In the NGA door, there are only a few photos and signs describing the life of the city walls. Frankly, I think it's the only place worth seeing. There's a bronze model of a city wall city in the park-I think it's worth taking pictures here. So humiliating! No residents of the daily necessities, no residents of the oral history, no establishment of a city Wall city life Museum, on the contrary in Doha, there is an Ipswich museum, showing the daily necessities of the inhabitants of the dry valley, oral history and their glorious past. These residents were moved to Qiantang because they wanted to build a foundry. In the same way, the city wall city residents to move the Qiantang, is to build a rotten Jiangnan branch garden!

  • It is a great park that has lots of greenery and interesting historical exhibitions of the Walled City. There are several exhibitions that showcase the lives of the residents as well as the living conditions. Going to this park really gave me insight and allowed me to understand more about the Walled City.
