National War Memorial, Ottawa
Visit National War Memorial, a cenotaph built to remember the sacrifice of Canadian men and women who have fought in times of war, who are fighting now, and who will fight in the future. Depicting uniformed figures passing under a granite arch, the memorial seeks not to glorify war, but to focus on the dutiful response from members of the Canadian armed forces. Officially unveiled in 1939, it was initially dedicated to those who took part in the First World War. The dedications have grown over time to include subsequent wars, with the memorial becoming a timeless symbol of honor, duty, and memory. National War Memorial Reviews
Beyond the obvious importance of the work as a monument, the design and artistic value of the statues is wonderful. The stern focus of the men, the frightened determination of the horses, the faithful... more »
A nice remembrance of the fallen men who fought for our freedom. Also a very nice remembrance of the tomb of the unknown solider. more »
I have always wanted to visit this place, and got my chance a few days ago. Even through the piles of snow Ottawa recieved, this place is kept clean. The sky opened up and I got sunshine for a few brief moments and wow, the monument looks so stunning. A truly peaceful and refractive time, and very meaningful tribute to all whom have given this country their all. Take a moment to pause and reflect if you ever get a chance to visit. It's a very peaceful place, even though it is in the middle of downtown. Just a magnificent, personal experience.
Being here during Remembrance Day was a sombre experience. Thanks to all the brave soldiers who gave their lives for this country. This memorial is a very important part of the city and our country. In the heart of Ottawa, this place is somewhere every Canadian should visit at least once.
