Skyline Trail, Jasper National Park

#3 of 14 in Trails in Jasper National Park
Steep but rewarding, Skyline Trail is mostly used by hikers, nature lovers, and bird-watchers. The wide and paved section of the trail ends abruptly and is followed by a path that climbs continuously up a ridge through the woods. The trail is steepest just below the summit, so watch your step especially when coming down. The views from the topmost ridge--of verdant mountains and picturesque river valleys--are mesmerizing. Pack a windbreaker for the top. On your way back, stop for a dip in the hot springs, the entrance to which lies on the same roundabout as the trailhead. • We managed the ascent in 1 3/4 hours. It's really exhausting and I couldn't talk about the climb because I didn't have the air. Upstairs you really have a great view. But with us it was totally windy. We were glad that we had enough clothes on and also headgear. In the morning it was 2 degrees when we left at 8:30h. The way back went insignificantly faster in 1.5 hrs as you have to constantly watch out where you go. We were on the verge of another couple at the summit. On the way back, crowds of people came to meet us. So go early.

  • 5 stars are actually not enough. This hike, which you can still do in the afternoon in a good 3.5-4 hours, takes you to the limits from time to time, but is by far one of the best in the whole area, if not the best. The trail goes for a long time through the forest and then above the tree line to the summit consistently quite steeply uphill, but is well developed and heavily frequented during the holidays. It takes about 2 hours from the parking lot to reach the first lookout point, after which it is still about 20 minutes to the windy summit, which you should definitely invest, because the view is simply magnificent. A little caution is required when descending from the summit, because the path there consists only of rubble and a slip can easily drive you considerably to the sidelines. However, I have also seen many families above, which is why it should not be a problem with some tread-proof smaller children. The ascent goes into the thighs, the descent to the knees, an absolute treat is therefore the relaxing bath in the Miette Hot Springs. There's nothing to complain about for 6.50' + 1' towel + 1' locker. There is also a small restaurant, so the Sulphur Skyline Trail is an absolute must at the beginning of a tour of Jasper National Park.
