Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park, Egmont

Translated in the indigenous Chinook language to mean 'turbulent water or rapid torrent', Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park's powerful majestic rapids will leave you inspired by nature. A relatively easy 4 km (2.5 mi) well developed trail leads to two viewing locations-- Roland Point and North Point-- where you can witness the power of the roaring rapids. The difference in water levels at the two different points of the rapids often exceeds 2 m (6.5 ft), with 200 billion gallons of water powering through the narrows, connecting the Sechelt and Jervis inlets at speeds reaching 30 kmh (18.6 mph). Spectacular whirlpools and foaming furious whitewater, the rapids should only be tackled by very experienced extreme kayakers. • If you tire easily maybe the trail into Skookumchuck isn’t for you. I wouldn’t rate it as a challenging hike but it is 45 min each way. When we went, there was a troop of Boy Scouts there on the rocks...  more »

  • Incredible place. Be sure to go at the right time and take into account the walk to get there at the peak of the action.
  • Completely unique experience! A must for outdoors-loving visitors to the Sunshine Coast. Prepare yourself for an easy-but-long hike to the rapids. Also make sure you time your arrival for just before the tide goes in or out. You can look up local tidal charts for this (as the time changes every day -- tide is determined by the position of the moon). Watch sea lions and birds feast on fish as the tides of Sechelt, Narrows, and Salmon Inlets all come rushing through a gap only 300m wide!
