Johnston Canyon, Banff National Park

Hike the scenic Johnston Canyon in the Banff National Park. A relatively easy trek, the route takes you along a well-maintained walkway with railings. Enjoy the picturesque view as you partake in the tranquil hike, and admire two scenic waterfalls along the way. You can continue to the meadow above the canyon to see six vibrant mineral springs known as the Ink Pots. In winter, parts of the trail can be icy or covered in snow, so walk carefully and bring suitable equipment. • About a 20-30 min walk to the lower falls with a ton of people in July. Some narrow walkways but very easy to walk on them. Long wait to get a photo in the waterfall with mist around. Didn’t wait to g...  more »
  • It is so worth the climb/hike up the groomed path. Breathtaking views! Both waterfalls had spectacular views and scenery and if you go all the way to the ink spots you won't be disappointed!  more »

  • Its easy hike with little bit elevation gain in between. Total hike would be around 3.5 km. People usually take 2 hours to hike and spend some time taking pics. Hike is mostly through shaded area. Lower canyon fall has less height but volume is huge. Upper canyon fall is taller and landscape has more variety. There is big crowd at lower canyon fall compared to upper one as majority of the people decide to come back after shorter hike.
  • Beautiful hike directly alongside (and sometimes over thanks to impressive cliff-wall attached walkways) the river. Lots of cascading waterfalls, rapids, as well as the two primary waterfalls (lower and upper). Trail up to this point is entirely paved and easy going. Continuing up to the ink pots is another 3km, through mostly shaded Forest with less viewpoints. However, the inkpots are best, and even better in my opinion is the river rolling now more gently through a lush meadow-like area with mountains flanking either side. Trail also dog friendly. Took us 3 hrs with lots of stopping to admire sights, 6.8 mile round-trip or thereabouts.
