Phobjikha Valley, Wangdue Phodrang District

#1 of 6 in Nature in Bhutan
Nature comes alive in Phobjikha Valley, a vast bowl-shaped glacial valley on the edge of the Black Mountain National Park. This conservation area is well-known for black-necked cranes, who roost in dwarf bamboo groves in this 3,000 m (9,842 ft) valley. You can observe them from an indoor deck with telescopes. Yak, muntjacs, sambar deer, Himalayan serow, and foxes are among the wildlife sheltered by blue pine, birch, and maple forests. Take a nature trail and visit the 17th century monastery perched on a hillock ridge above the valley. • A lovely, flat L-shapes valley that goes for around 25km, the key things here are hiking, visiting the Gangtey Monastery, and seeing the black-neck cranes (in season). Peaceful. Bucolic. Take this as ...  more »
  • From the Dewachen hotel, we walked across the gentle Pobzika valley to Gante Gompa. It took about two hours as a result of taking the photograph of crane on the way, and having struggled on an unexpected slope. I think that it is a beautiful scenery which remained in the most impression in Bhutan when looking back after it returns to the Japan though it is sure not to be a reason why there is something in particular. I regret not being able to convey it in the photograph.

  • It is one of the largest habitat of black neck crane. Ideal time to visit is in the month of December (winter). There is a bird watch center and a small museum, do visit it. They play a small clip about the valley and its mythological relevance. The black neck crane is believed to be very sacred in the valley. The Guide/ Research Students will really give you good insights about the valley. Though there are very few restaurants in the valley, it is better to carry food along. We visited one of the restaurant just opposite to the valley, it was pretty decent. Also, if you are visiting the bird watch center, please stop over for watch and pray for the hurt black neck crane caged there.
  • Amazing valley with peaceful views all around. This valley is famous for its wetlands where the black necked cranes migrate during late October to early November. The valley can be reached by road till the royal society for protection of natural and walk down till the valley. Other way is to walk through the village and through the thick forest where we can see different kinds of birds. The valley is must visit if you are in Bhutan during November.
