Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna

#1 of 3,961 in Things to do in Austria
A former residence of the Habsburg monarchs, Schonbrunn Palace reflects centuries of imperial Austrian history. Emperor Leopold I commissioned the palace at the end of the 17th century, but it was not for another 50 years that the palace became a focal point of court life, playing host to many European statesmen. The gardens are landscaped according to Baroque standards, forming a unit with the palace, and remain almost unchanged since the 1700s. The grounds include the oldest zoo in the world, Schonbrunn Zoo, home to more than 700 species of animals. You can explore the 1,441-room palace by purchasing a ticket; you'll find many different ticket options, which vary according to how many rooms you want to visit. Whichever option you choose, you'll follow an audio guide through the Rococo-styled rooms, listening to the stories related to each. • One of the world's largest complexes with a beautiful garden with fountains, a zoo and a breathtaking view of the city. Vienna would put a visit just for that.

  • Totally worth it but do it on your own, I went on tour and you don't have time to visit the gardens that are beautiful and where is the hill with the lookout. We had to run it. Go with time and enjoy this dream place

  • It is very beautiful inside the palace. Everything inside which include all masterpieces and furniture were well kept and maintained. There are various languages of Audio guide that available which is very useful and practical. If you visit the palace in summer I highly recommend to go there early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Also buying the tickets online would be a good idea to avoid a long queue. Be aware that photograph was not allowed inside the castle ;)
  • Such a wonderful place that if you're in Vienna you MUST visit. There's no entrance to the main garden but if you want to visit the palaces you have to get tickets. Also to go to the maze you should get a ticket. You can either get tickets at the main entrance or at each garden or palace you're going to visit. Climb the hill all the way up cause the scenery from there is awesome! Also make sure to have comfortable shoes with you because there's plenty of walking!
