Petersfriedhof, Salzburg

4.6
Visit the catacombs embedded in the rock of the Festungsberg at Petersfriedhof, the oldest cemetery in the city. The oldest tombstone dates to 1288, but the catacombs most likely originate from the early Christian days. Walk through narrow passages, which probably served as hermitages and a burial site. Climb the staircase up to the two chapels. Enter the Maximus cave, the highest prayer room of the catacombs. Notice an arched grave that supposedly served as a stone bed. Between the two chapels, you can stand on a viewing platform with a small wooden bell tower. Many of the aristocratic families and notable people of Salzburg are buried here, including Mozart's sister, Nannerl, and Haydn's younger brother, Michael. Petersfriedhof is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Salzburg Edition.

  • Walking around in the ancient city of Fort, you are free to come out, the center is a cute chapel, on the side is the mountain wall, although listed as the scene, but this is the tomb of Graves, is the rest of the dead place, in Taiwan, will someone go to the Soul Tower? No, it's not! Although the finishing is very beautiful, but Graves tomb is the tomb of graves, according to the burial of a lot of celebrities, if it is its powder can come to worship, if only a pure visitor to see the hot, I think it is still not to disturb rest? Because it's not good to shoot someone else graves the tomb, there's not a picture in here.

  • From the Hoenjalceubureukeu Castle, take the funicular to the Kilkenny and see it in the small iron gate just to the left. It was also interesting to see the gravestone.

  • Very cool old cemetery and chapel. Definitely worth spending 15-20 minutes seeing the various gravestones and more elaborate gravesites.
  • It’s still a bit weird to me to assume a graveyard can be a tourist attraction - even after I went there as a tourist myself, but I have to admit I’m glad I did - there is no entry fee, the place is actually pretty small but it holds an incredible amount of history. There is also a catacomb (2€ fee) that is surprisingly the through the stairs up rather than down and is carved into the mountain rock. Very interesting
