Contained within the Nambung National Park, The Pinnacles Desert present an eerie landscape of limestone pillars rising from the sand about 100 km (62 mi) north of Perth. Largely unexplored until the 1960s, this area now attracts over 250,000 tourists per year. Recent developments include a visitor center, offering a brief educational lesson about these ancient stones created from seashells in an earlier epoch rich in marine life. Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon, when the play of light brings out the colors of the stones, and the extended shadows of the formations deliver a contrast highlighting their features. Emus and kangaroos, which make their permanent home at this park, are also more likely to be spotted in the early morning hours. The Pinnacles Desert Reviews
Walking through the pinnacles is an out of this world experience. The structures are fascinating and we were lucky enough to have some kangaroos hop past us. Felt very free in this environment. more »
It is basically a desert with stones sticking up, but I liked walking throu it and seeing imaginary shapes in the stones, like one does with clouds. Even so we have seen wild kangourous and an emu, I ... more »
Great drive through the natural featured. Very well arranged, plenty of spots to pull over for photos. Most of the drive arranged as a loop so no need to worry about incoming traffic. Lots of places to take quiet photos, even during busy time. You can also explore by foot but it does get very hot. The visitor center is also well worth a visit
Well worth the drive out from Perth. Amazing land formation stretching across a large area of the Nambung national park. It is a nice drive through a very well laid out track. There are also areas where you can stop and check out the area from lookouts, or walk through the Pinnacles. There is also an excellent information center. Half of it is like a museum detailing key information about the area and the Pinnacles, the other half is a well stocked Gift shop that also sells refreshments
