Hayravank Monastery, Hayravank

#4 of 16 in Things to do in Gegharkunik Province
Checkered stone vaults and exquisite carvings define Hayravank Monastery, a small, compact stone monastery perched on a cliff overlooking Lake Sevan. Built in the 9th to 12th centuries on one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, the site features a church with quatrefoil cruciform made of red and gray tuff stone. It also showcases typical steles with carved crosses scattered in the cemetery around the church. After 250 steps to the top, you will be perched above the noisy Sevan beach with a stunning view. A Bronze Age archeological site sits behind the church. While here sample ishkan, a Sevan trout endemic to the lake. • The temple of Hayravank is valid, the entrance is free. The beautiful carved wooden door immediately attracts attention. Inside the church is gloomy, but very interesting look rays of light, falling through narrow window openings. There are always few people and you can quietly walk in silence. We climbed to the neighboring rocky exits and admired the beautiful view of the temple and the lake. Near the temple there is a car parking and a small tent with souvenirs.

  • Not frequented by the monastery, but one of the ancient and beautiful. Located on the shores of Lake Sevan and from it opens a fabulous landscape on the lake and ridges. In general will be in Sevan I advise and there to visit, anyway there is nearby.
