The Monastery of Geghard, Geghard

4.9
Listed as a World Heritage Site, The Monastery of Geghard allegedly shelters the spear--brought by apostle Judas Thaddaeus--which pierced Jesus during his crucifixion. Founded in the 4th century, the monastery complex was partially carved into a mountain, surrounded by towering cliffs and the Azat River gorge. Examine the elaborate structures with engraved khachkars--memorial stone stelas bearing a cross symbol. Enter the chapels, churches, and tombs located in the compound to observe the holy relics hidden amid rock-cut walls. Near the parking lot, vendors sell homemade sweet bread, dried fruit, treats, and souvenirs. • An incredible beauty place, not defiant anything but admiration. By the way, local merchants can buy churchchellu and dried fruits at a price lower than the market:)

  • Powerfully, strong, brutal. The monastery is naturally inscribed in the surrounding nature, which is an integral part of the entire fundamental and majestic Mountain massif of Armenia. In the wide reliable stone walls of geghard simultaneously there is a security and powerful spiritual energy. The energy here is enclosed in stone! Entourage and the environment of the whole complex only contribute to this energy flow to admire its power. Despite the remoteness from the infrastructure, the territory is rather ennobled and well-groomed. On the porch there is even a small bazaar, where they sell a very tasty and still warm gatu.

  • One of the major touris spots in Armenia. A big religious complex carved inside the mountain. Quite impressive and well preserved. Listed as UNESCO Heritage site. A must see for sure :)
  • One of the most amazing churches in Armenia. It does get very busy sadly but you can always find a small hideaway place to pray and spend some alone time. A must for anyone visiting Armenia. The gorge itself is breathtaking views with a river that flows through and the caves all around the complex are amazing.
